Tommies Secure No. 2 Seed, Turn Focus to ACAA Championship Weekend
Fredericton, NB - The St. Thomas University Tommies women’s volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 15-5 record, dropping just two matches on home court. Despite sharing the same record as UNBSJ and Mount Allison University, the Tommies earned the number two seed heading into the ACAA playoffs.
Now, the Tommies are ready to prove themselves on the championship stage. For many players on the roster, this marks their first playoff appearance, but nerves are outweighed by excitement and hunger.
This season, STU welcomed 10 rookies who have seamlessly integrated into the team and culture. First-year setter Ella Estey has been a steady force, finishing fourth in the conference in assists per set (6.73), orchestrating the Tommies high-powered offense. Cali Nadeau has also made her mark, playing a crucial role from the service line and applying pressure in key moments. Contributions across the roster, combined with a collective drive to win, have propelled the Tommies to the top of the league entering playoffs.
Veteran leadership has been just as critical. Reigning league MVP Kathleen Boyle continues to dominate, recording 266 kills this season—third most in the conference—while also ranking fourth in total digs with 225. Her all-around impact has helped STU lead the conference in both team kills and total assists (795), underscoring the team’s balanced and dynamic attack.
The road to a championship will not come easy. The Tommies will await the winner of UNBSJ and the DAL Rams in the opening semifinal matchup on Saturday. With competition this tight, it will take a complete team effort, from veterans to rookies, to dig out a championship performance.
If Tommies advance, the Women’s Championship Final is set for Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
Now, more than ever, the Tommies are counting on their home crowd. Let’s pack the Pit this weekend and create an atmosphere worthy of championship volleyball.
