Fredericton, NB- The St Thomas University Tommies dispatched the visiting Holland College Hurricanes 3-1 on Sunday afternoon, in what was a battle for first place in the ACAA.
The Tommies (4-0-1) wasted no time getting on the board against the Hurricanes (4-1-0) at Scotiabank South Park, as it was their goal scoring dynamo, Nikita McCartney (Moncton, NB) getting her league leading 9th goal of the season, on a brilliant through ball from Leandra Upton (Fredericton, NB).
The teams traded scoring opportunities to close out the first half but neither Hailey Terstege (Stratford, PE), of the Hurricanes, nor Mary Cronin (Fredericton, NB), of the Tommies, would allow anything to slip past them.
It wasn't until the 60th minute that McCartney struck once again to give her team a two-goal lead on the afternoon.
Katherine McEwen (Stratford, PE) answered for the Hurricanes 19 minutes later to cut the lead to two, but 4th year veteran Louisa Hughes (Fredericton, NB) restored the Tommies' lead to two goals. Hughes noticed Terstege off her line in net and sent the ball into the back of the net from 40 yards out.
"It took a full 90-minute team effort to secure this victory today," head coach Michelle DeCourcey had to say about her team's performance.
The Tommies will be on the road to Saint John on Wednesday for a midweek date with the Seawolves, while the Hurricanes will visit Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday.
