Tommies Advance to ACAA Final with OT Win Over Mystics
The St. Thomas University Tommies punched their ticket to the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Assocation women's soccer finals after edging the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics 2-1 in overtime in the conference semi-finals Saturday afternoon.
This will be the first ACAA finals appearance for the Tommies, who finished third in the ACAA this season, in over a decade.
The Mystics struck first in the tightly contested match when Breagh Laing beat Tommies keeper Mary Cronin early in the second half.
The Tommies responded moments later with a goal from Nikita McCartney, who profited off a scramble in front following a free kick.
The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, taking the game to overtime.
Moira Kinney put away the game-winner 7:28 into extra time, booking the Tommies' trip to the ACAA final.
The Green and Gold will face the University of King's College Blue Devils in the championship game. The Blue Devils earned their berth to the final by topping the first-place Dalhousie Agricultural Campus Rams 1-0 in penalty kicks in the other semi-final.
Both of the Tommies' regular season matches with the Blue Devils resulted in a tie—they played to a 1-1 draw in Fredericton and a 0-0 result in Halifax.
Kickoff for the ACAA final is at 12:00 pm in Saint John.
