A Message to Tommies Nation: Women’s Rugby 7's, 2026–27
Fredericton, NB - St. Thomas University Athletics would like to share an important update regarding the Women’s Rugby 7's program for the 2026–27 season.
Following the 2025 season, and with a number of student-athletes graduating or moving on from the program, it became clear that there would not be sufficient roster numbers to field a competitive team for the upcoming season.
Over the past several months, meaningful efforts were made by the coaching staff, current student-athletes, and the department to recruit and build the roster. These efforts included outreach initiatives, off-season training opportunities, and events such as a Try-It Rugby Day. Despite these efforts, we were unable to secure the numbers required to continue the program in the immediate term.
As part of our league obligations, we are required to formally declare team participation in advance of the season. After careful consideration of the risks and impact of declaring a team without a sustainable roster, we have made the difficult decision not to declare a Women’s Rugby 7s team for the 2026–27 season.
This decision was not made lightly, and it is one that comes with disappointment for our department and community.
We would like to sincerely thank all student-athletes, coaches, alumni, and supporters who have contributed to the growth and success of Women’s Rugby at STU. Your commitment has played an important role in shaping the program’s legacy.
Once a Tommie, Always a Tommie.
