Tommies Women’s Rugby Welcomes Newfoundland Prop Jessica Smith
Fredericton, NB — Tommies women’s rugby program is excited to announce the addition of Jessica Anne Smith, a forward from Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, to the 2025 recruiting class.
Smith, who plays both prop and hook, developed her rugby roots with Ascension Collegiate and the Rock Rugby Women’s Program, where she earned a reputation for her high energy, and work ethic.
“I bring energy, hard work, and a team-first attitude to the Tommies rugby program,” said Smith. “I love pushing myself to improve and supporting those around me. I’m always looking to bring smiles, even during tough moments. I’m ready to be part of a strong, positive team culture.”
A well-rounded student-athlete, Smith’s academic focus will be in journalism and sociology, drawn by St. Thomas University’s nationally respected Liberal Arts programs.
“STU has always been my top choice,” Smith shared. “The smaller class sizes and strong sense of community really stood out to me. I wanted a place where I could focus on what I’m passionate about — telling stories, understanding society, and connecting with others.”
Outside of rugby, Smith’s leadership and creativity have flourished in activities ranging from the Ascension Drama Club, Improv Team, and Debate Club to roles on the Yearbook Committee, Social Justice Committee, and Ascension News Paper.
Head coach Gabriel Kim is thrilled about what Smith brings to the program — both on and off the field.
With the addition of Jessica Anne Smith, women's rugby adds their third recruit for next fall.
