Tommies Welcome Versatile Guard Annabel Bast to 2026-2027 Roster
Originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, Bast joins the Tommies’ backcourt as a versatile guard known for her defensive intensity, strong communication, and impressive basketball IQ. She developed her game at Luther College High School and with Rise Above Basketball, earning a reputation for hustle, leadership, and a team-first mentality.
“I’m excited to bring defensive intensity, strong communication, hustle, and a positive attitude to the Tommies,” she said. “I love the game, and I’m ready to contribute in whatever ways I can.”
Bast’s commitment to STU was influenced by both the academic and athletic experience the university offers.“I chose St. Thomas University because of the liberal arts focus, the small and tight-knit community, and the strong, competitive reputation of the basketball program,” she shared. “After my first conversation with Coach Connors, I immediately felt like STU was the perfect fit for me — plus I’m excited for a change of scenery from the prairies!”
Off the court, she plans to explore Social Work with long-term aspirations of pursuing a career in law. Her interests stretch well beyond basketball, she coaches her school’s dance team and previously danced competitively for nearly 14 years. She’s also deeply involved in school life as SRC President and participates in multiple sports including soccer, flag football, ultimate frisbee, and even has experience playing tackle football.
Bast spoke highly of the Tommies program and the welcoming environment she has already experienced.
“The STU team culture seems amazing, and the players have been so supportive and welcoming,” she said. “The program competes at a high level in the CCAA, and I really love the defense-focused style of play. Coach Connors has been incredibly helpful throughout the recruiting process —he’s knowledgeable, consistent, and truly cares about his athletes.”
Looking ahead, she’s eager to begin her journey in Fredericton.“I’m super excited and grateful for the opportunity to play post-secondary basketball at STU. Even though I’ve never been to New Brunswick and it’s a long way from Saskatchewan, I can’t wait to learn from my new teammates and coaches and represent the Tommies on and off the court.”
Coach Connors shares the enthusiasm.“We are very excited to have Annabel join our program. She is a very good shooter and handles the ball well. Her defensive mindset fits our style of play perfectly. She is an excellent student who embodies the ideals of our program. We look forward to watching her develop during her time at STU.”
The Tommies are thrilled to add her competitiveness, character, and leadership to the roster and look forward to welcoming her to campus this fall.
