Coffey Set to Take Helm of Tommies Men's Rugby
The St. Thomas University Tommies men’s rugby program is pleased to announce the appointment of Matt Coffey as the team’s latest head coach.
Coffey has spent the past eight years with the Tommies as an assistant coach, and prior to that he was a Tommie himself, playing from 2005-2008.
“I was also a multi-sport athlete throughout my life and found rugby in university, which immediately became ‘my sport’, so bridging the gap for athletes that come into our program with limited experience is something I can speak to from a recruitment perspective,” said Coffey about what he will bring to the program as a head coach. “My experience with the program and relationship with the rest of the staff and athletes also makes this an easy transition.”
Coffey intends to keep the coaching staff intact for the coming year, with Tim Comeau, Brandon Courtney, Johnny Cullen and Mike Thurber remaining with the team. Former head coach, Curtis Lauzon, will also remain with the team in a more limited role as an advisor/assistant.
“We all thank Curtis for moving the program forward over the past couple years and are excited to have his commitment to help out moving forward,” added Coffey.
St. Thomas Director of Athletics, Michael Eagles, is thrilled Coffey stepped to the plate when he was presented with the opportunity to take over the team.
“I am very excited that Matt has agreed to become the head coach of our men’s rugby team. Matt has been an assistant under a great rugby coaches in Curtis Lauzon and Jon Wilson for a number of years, and is more than ready for this new role. I am also thrilled that we once again will have an alumnus guiding this team. We look forward to his leadership and the growth of the program.”
