Weekend Recap Nov 29-30
Things are slowing down for the St. Thomas University (STU) athletics. Three teams were in action last weekend, all of whom took their talents on the road. Some of the Tommies squads suited up for the last time in the first half. They will return in the new year. Other teams have one more game remaining in their first semester schedule.
Women’s Volleyball team sweeps final games of semester
STU’s Women’s Volleyball team were in Halifax for a pair of games against the MSVU Mystics. Both games were taken by the Tommies. Last weekend also marked the final time the team will take the court during the first half of the season.
The team began their road trip on Saturday evening. STU took the first set 25-22, in what was a back-and-forth battle. MSVU tied the game with a win in the next match. However, your Tommies did not faulter. The team took the next two sets. STU held the Mystics under 20 points during both sets. Your Tommies came out on top with a 3-1 victory. Ella Estey led the charge with four kills and seven digs. She even finished with a service ace.
STU was back on the court Sunday for an afternoon showdown with the Mystics. Your Tommies swept the game 3-0. The team won the opening set by two points. STU dominated the next two matches. The squad held MSVU to 11 points in the third set to win the game. The win helped the Tommies move to 7-3 on the season. They also finished the semester in a three-way tie for first place in the ACAA with Mount Allison and UNB Saint John.
Basketball Tommies continue winning streak on the road
STU’s Men’s and Women's Basketball teams were on the road last weekend. The squads traveled to Saint John for a pair of games on Saturday evening against the UNB SJ Seawolves. Both teams found themselves on the victorious end of the scoreboard. Last weekend also marked the first half of a home-and-home series.
STU’s Women Basketball team kicked off the evening doubleheader. The squad defeated the Seawolves 69-48, despite a shaky first quarter. The team bounced back to take a seven-point lead into the halftime break. STU carried the momentum into the second half and did not look back. Claudia Steeves led the charge with 16 points. She also grabbed six rebounds and had three assists.
The Men’s basketball squad were equally impressive. STU defeated the Seawolves 91-76. Your Tommies went down by two points following the first half. However, the squad controlled the game in the second. Jeven Eddy and Ceejay Hanson each made an impact. Eddy finished with a double-double, while Hanson collected 17 points and four rebounds. STU also extended their winning streak to six games.
What’s on Tap for Next Weekend
Action for STU Athletics is slowly coming to an end for the semester. Next weekend is the final time STU will be featured during the first half of the season. Two teams are set to take the court.
STU’s Basketball teams will be at home hosting their Youth Jersey day for a pair of games against the UNB Saint John Seawolves, their interprovincial rivals. They are playing in front of the home fans for the final time before the new year. Tip-off is scheduled for two o’clock for the Women’s team, and four o’clock for the women. Next weekend will also mark youth jersey day.
