The women's basketball team at St. Thomas University will boast more local talent in 2018-2019 with the addition of Kiandra MacMullin.

The five-foot eleven forward from Fredericton High School committed to the Tommies in December and head coach Fred Connors is eager to see her continue to grow as a player in his program.

"Kiandra only started playing basketball at the end of middle school, but she's very athletic and is learning the nuances of the game," he said. "She's very keen and wants to grow and get better."

MacMullin played two years of junior varsity basketball at FHS before moving up to join the varsity squad. She's also been a member of the Basketball New Brunswick U15 developmental and U16 teams.

This season, the Black Kats senior has shown she's able to knock down shots and finish around the hoop—skills Connors believes will only continue to grow.

"Kiandra has shown the ability to step out and make three's and we like her ability to play multiple positions and add length to our front court. She's also getting stronger, learning to finish, and is becoming a better defender," he said.

"I've worked with her at Tommies camp and love her attitude toward improving herself and supporting her teammates. We're very excited to add someone with her potential as a player and character to our program."

For MacMullin, choosing St. Thomas was about having flexibility in her studies as well as a competitive university basketball career.

"I chose STU to continue my studies at a smaller and more personal school in order to receive a well-rounded education," she said.

"The competitiveness that has been shown by the women's basketball program and their history of winning, along with the mentoring from Coach Connors, made it a good fit to further my basketball career."

The Tommies are currently sitting in fourth place in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association standings with a record of 3-3. They will look to improve that record this weekend when they travel to Halifax to take on the University of King's College Blue Devils and the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics.
